Episode Transcription

Welcome to Naked Stories by Soho Media Club. This is Episode 0, an insight of what's to come in the series. My name is Roses Okhipo and I'll be your host.

I must admit, I am not a professional presenter. I've never had vocal training or conducted a media interview. However, I have worked in the media industry for over eight years and I've witnessed and experienced the entrenched bias on and off camera. People talk about change in the industry, their schemes, talks and tick boxes. The reality is, it is the responsibility of all of us to make this change happen.

In November 2019, I got a reminder on my phone about a networking event I'd RSVP-ed. Instead of going home after work, I found myself in the cold, dark alleyways of Soho looking for 8 Berwick Street. After getting lost and many swear words later, I resisted the urge to go home and get into my nice warm bed. Finally, I found the spot. With the chill still clinging onto my coat, I climbed the stairs and walked into a warm, intimate... okay, it was small, it was a small space. It was nice, though. There was a vibe, a magic in the air. Plus, importantly, there was a snack table with an array of cheeses, beers and abundance of sweet, sweet wine. It was a club, Soho Media Club. And so from then on, I've been attending every monthly meetup. It was a safe space to share stories, meet people and have fun without being judged. Beyond the snack table, this club had something special, something rare. Every month, as I chatted my way around the room, I look around and it's always an inclusive environment where everyone has a voice, the power to shift the dial. This was something I wanted to be part of.

Getting to the point without boring you with stories of me laughing way too loud whilst drinking and eating my body weight at these meet ups, I spoke with Tom and Jaisica, the founders of Soho Media Club, which led me to be here. My passion and their ethos, as well as the promise of being fed doughnuts - no lie, true story - was the foundation of this collaboration.

So here I am being told thought-provoking and sometimes heart-wrenching stories from professionals and bringing them to you. In each episode, I speak to an anonymous guest to uncover their experiences of diversity, inclusion and prejudice in the media industry. Stripped down and fully transparent, guests share their stories, which previously may have been too risky, painful or controversial to talk about openly. The stories touch on different aspects of diversity, including sexual orientation, disability, health, anxiety and racial, cultural and gender diversity.

Anonymous guests. Nothing held back. Just honest stories. That's the premise behind Naked Stories.
